Shinn (1876-1953) began his artistic career in 1893, enrolling in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He simultaneously began working at the Philadelphia Press, where he was employed in the Art Department alongside his future Ashcan artists George Luks, John Sloan and William Glackens. After moving to New York in 1897, he bounced between different newspaper and magazine illustration jobs while also receiving commissions for publications and private projects. Shinn also illustrated approximately 30 literary works, including several CharlesDickens novels.
