EXPOSITION A LA BODINIERE. 1894.
23x29 3/4 inches. Charles Verneau, Paris.
Condition B: repaired tears, restoration and overpainting in margins and image.
La Bodiniere<> was the exhibition hall of the Theâtre d' application<>, which offered a variety of attractions from art exhibits by Paris' avant garde artists to shadow plays. Mister Bodiniere opened his eponymously named gallery to support Paris' avant garde artists. His first show was this exhibition of works by Steinlen, which was a success for the artist. That year Bodiniere also held an exhibition of the work of Ibels (who designed his own poster) and he regularly hosted the Salon des Peintres Graveurs<>. Steinlen chose a horizontal format for this exhibition poster (exceedingly rare for the genre) in which he delicately depicts two of his beloved cats. The remainder of the poster is filled up by Steinlen's hand-drawn typography. Crauzat p. 134, Bargiel & Zagrodski p.38.
