British-born Mayo was a painter, illustrator and printmaker. She moved to Australia in 1953 and designed a series of posters highlighting some of the continent's exotic wildlife, including koalas and the Great Barrier Reef. This poster, with a "kangaroo atop a stark desert landscape, and its typography influenced by Aboriginal art, is one of the most notable Australian travel posters ever produced" (Trading Places p. 8). Mayo is best regarded for her rendering of animals, which appear in all of the mediums in which she worked. Monash p. 16, Lebovic 8.
