Additional Details

Ellen Craft (1826-1897) and her husband William were slaves on a Georgia plantation. In 1848 they decided to escape to freedom. Ellen was a very light-skinned woman, her husband William, quite dark. She dressed in men's clothing, wearing dark glasses and a cloak and, posing as master and slave, they made their way North to Philadelphia where William Wells Brown met them and escorted them to Boston.
