Estienne II, Henri (1528-1598) De Lipsii Latinitate. Octavo, *8, **8, A-Z8, Aa-Mm8 (**8 blank & present); text in roman letter, single column, some water staining, bio-predation to binding and top corner of final fifty leaves; bound in contemporary limp parchment with marginal rodent damage, decased, 6 x 3.5 in. Frankfurt am Main: [no printer], 1595.

Additional Details

First edition Estienne writes in criticism of Justus Lipsius's stodgy Latin style (too similar to Tacitus and Seneca, and a terrible example for young people), but somewhat inexplicably departs from that subject to advocate the launching of a Christian crusade to wipe out the Turks. Scaliger renamed the work, De Latinitate Lipsiana adversus Turcam. Schreiber 225; Adams S-1764; Renouard 157, #2.
