Von Haimendorf traveled to the Holy Land in the mid-1560s. He also visited the largest Greek Ionian island, Zakynthos, a common transfer destination for Europe-based Holy Land pilgrims. There he visited a memorial to the great physician anatomist Vesalius, who had just recently passed away unexpectedly on the island while returning from a similar journey in 1564.
