One of the most famous French aviators of the 1920s and 30s was Jean Mermoz. Often referred to in the American press as "the French Lindbergh" he was young, dashing, fearless and a committed pilot. He was a pioneer of flying at night, and in 1928 he made the first successful night flight in South America, landing by the lights of three fires. In 1930 he was the first man ever to make the South Atlantic crossing between Dakar, in Senegal, and Natal, in Brazil, opening the Aeropostale route between the continents. This rare Brazilian poster not only captures the excitement of night flying but also the still-new thrill of inter-continental flights.
