Estimate: $ 3,000 - $ 4,000
F. C. VEIT (DATES UNKNOWN) NEW HAVEN R.R. Circa 1940.
40 1/2x27 3/4 inches, 103x70 1/2 cm.
Condition B / B+: restored losses in corners; restoration and overpainting along left edge, affecting image.
Closely echoing Sascha Maurer's style and graphic optimism, Veit depicts a sun-kissed, happy skier. The young woman, with her broad, white smile and eyes shielded from the sun by her visor, could be directly out of Maurer's sketchbook. Breaking away from Maurer's style, Veit adds a near-photographic depiction of a train (one of the railroad's Snow Trains), and skiers in the background. Veit is credited with having designed two other posters; one other for the New Haven Railroad, and the other, incongruously, for the United Nations. Skiing p. 112.
