A view of the majestic water and light show in Neptune's Basin (or fountain) at Versailles. Louis XIV inaugurated the Fountain Shows at the palace of Versailles in 1666. The Neptune fountain was completed in 1741 under the reign of Louis XV. The fountain, featuring statues of Neptune, his wife (Amphitrite), sea monsters and cupids, also has water jets situated within the statuary and in the vases around the perimeter. This poster promotes two events in the Royal Gardens, the Fêtes de la Nuit, a spectacular nighttime water and light show and the Grandes Eaux, featuring music and the fountains by day.
