FADEN, WILLIAM; and JEFFERYS, THOMAS. A Plan of Port Royal in South Carolina. Double-page engraved map of present-day Beaufort County in South Carolina, including Hilton Head. 800x660 mm, wide margins; about excellent condition. London, [1776?]

Additional Details

Captain John Gascoigne (ca. 1697-1753), on whose work this plan is based, was a British naval officer, hydrographer, and landowner in South Carolina. His surveys mouth of the Beaufort River would serve as the basis for a Des Barres chart, and related Faden and Sayer & Bennett productions. At this point in the mid-1770s, Faden was still heavily reliant on the reputation of Thomas Jefferys, and for this reason the latter's name is included imprint although he had been dead for around five years. Cf. Phillips, Maps, page 704 (1794 Laurie & Whittle); Stevens & Tree, 71(a) who date the map to 1773.
