CAPTAIN OF THE USS BROOKLYN FARRAGUT, DAVID G. Letter Signed, "D.E. Farragut / Captain," to Secretary of the Navy Isaac Toucey, reporting that he had brought Minister [Robert Milligan] McLane from Vera Cruz to Mobile Bay, stating that he is awaiting further orders, and remarking that there had been minor engine trouble that would be repaired in a couple of days. 1 1/2 pages, tall 4to, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet, pale blue ruled paper; some loss to "u" and "t" of signature, minor loss to lower left edge (not affecting text), short closed separations at folds. ". . . The Minister . . . mentioned . . . that he would communicate with the Hon Secretary in person as to the future movements of the Brooklyn and requested that I would await at this place the further orders. . . ."
On August 5, 1864, the Brooklyn participated in Farragut's assault on Fort Morgan under the command of Capt. James Alden. Early in the assault, a crew member of the Brooklyn shouted to Farragut on board the Hartford, warning of mines ("torpedoes"), to which Farragut is said to have replied, "Damn the torpedoes!"
