Etching and engraving, circa 1581. 232x153 mm; 91/4x61/8 inches. Ex-collection Thomas Thane, dated 1817 in ink (Lugt 811, verso). With thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark. A very good impression of this scarce print.
According to Reed, "The etched lines of the plate were underbitten, did not hold sufficient ink, and printed pale and gray . . . In order to salvage the plate, Barocci used a burin to engrave deeper lines and dots that held more ink and printed more darkly. Almost the entire figure of the saint was reworked this way," (Reed/Wallace, Italian Etchers of the Renaissance & Baroque, Boston, 1989, p. 93). Bartsch 3.
