After studying in Wüppertal, Blase worked with Felix Müller as Art Director for the American Houses in Germany between 1952 and 1958. It was an important network for American cultural and social propaganda, and Blase was in charge of poster and catalogue design as well as exhibition architecture. (Among other projects, they organized the first one-man show of Müller-Brockmann's work.) After a stint working for the German Post Office for whom he designed more than fifty stamps, he eventually settled in Kassel as a teacher. He became an influential figure in German graphics, working regularly for the Dokumenta and other Hessische institutions, as well as accepting international commissions. Blase p. 55.
