Felrath Hines achieved critical recognition for his painterly abstraction with two solo exhibitions at Parma Gallery in 1957 and 1959, and his inclusion in group exhibitions at the John Heller Gallery and Parma Gallery in New York in the 1950s. He was a founding member of the Spiral Group in 1963. Hines also had a very successful career as a painting conservator--he was a conservator to Georgia O'Keefe from 1967-1979, and an on-call conservator to the Museum of Modern Art. Hines later became Chief Conservator at the National Portrait Gallery from 1972-1980 and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC from 1980 until his retirement in 1984. Hines's paintings received recent recognition with the exhibition Color Balance: Paintings by Felrath Hines and Alma Thomas at the Nasher Museum and the solo retrospective at the North Carolina Central University Art Museum, both in 2010 in Durham, NC. His work is in many museums collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Sheldon Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC.
