Additional Details

De Fer's map was issued the same year as Delisle's landmark treatment of roughly the same area. Today the de Fer is probably a bit scarcer, but, according to Cumming (169), the cartography is markedly retrograde by comparison.

This map constitutes the lower left plate of a large wall map that was produced for John Law's Compagnie d'Occident. It was likely one of the most influential sales tools during the Mississippi Bubble, and the inclusion of very many decorative vignettes of Indians and animals seems calculated at lending the land a vibrant and productive feeling.
