Etching and drypoint, circa 1642-45. 127x95 mm; 5x3 3/4 inches, thread margins. Second state (of 2). Partial eagle or phoenix watermark. Ex-collection G. Bewley (Lugt supplement 1137a, verso). Soft vertical crease. A brilliant, early impression with considerable burr throughout, especially on the globe, the chair back and on the articles on the table.
A similar impression, with slightly less burr and with an uninked hair line in the upper right corner, sold at Sotheby's, New York, April 29, 1999, sale 7297, lot 7. Like that impression, the current work has a similar fragment of a watermark. Bartsch 8; Hollstein 8.
