FERDINAND BOL
The Old Man with a Leaf of Trefoil on his Coat.

Etching, circa 1640. 87x72 mm; 3⅜x2⅞ inches, narrow margins. A very good impression of this extremely scarce etching.

Provenance: Dr. Carl von Guérard, Elberfeld, with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 1109); Thomas Graf, Berlin, with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 1092a); Dr. Heinz Fleischer, Berlin, with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 4578); Peter Morse, Hawaii, with the ink stamp verso (Lugt 4320).

Bol (1616-1680) arrived in Amsterdam in 1636, having completed his artist training in his native Dordrecht. He worked in Rembrandt van Rijn's workshop as an assistant, where he learned Rembrandt's style, until about 1641-42. Bol became a very successful artist in his own right, receiving several important commissions in and outside of Amsterdam. Hollstein 24.
