FERDINAND ERFMANN (1901 - 1968)

Parterreacrobaten.
Oil on linen on canvas. 520x495 mm; 20½x19½ inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right. 1950.

Provenance: private collection, New York.

Exhibited: Galerie Mokum, Ferdinand Erfmann Overzichtstentoonstelling (with the exhibition tage, verso), Amsterdam. This exhibition later travelled to Apeldoorn, Van Reekumgalerij; Breda, De Beyaard; Sittard, Het Kritzraadhuis.

Parterreacrobaten is a three-figured oil from Erfmann that depicts acrobats (Erfmann being one himself) in a flat and schematic figurative style that he characterized as ‘psychological synthetic realism'. The artwork could be a self-portrait inspired by a photograph in the Ralf Schlüter Archive.
