FERDINAND LOUIS GOTTLOB (1873-1935) 2E EXPOSITION DE PEINTRES LITHOGRAPHES. 1898.
461/2x31 inches. Lemercier, Paris.
Condition A: repaired tear in left margin.
Gottlob was both a painter and an illustrator, which was common for many young artists of the period as, for a while, the distinction between the fine arts and applied arts virtually disappeared. The blurring of this distinction led to exhibitions like Les Peintres Lithographes, for which Gottlob (who was not a prolific poster artist) designed their second exhibition poster. Just as in his paintings, in his posters he also plays with the effects of light and shadows. The young lady pictured here, going through a rack of lithographs, is seen only in dark profile against the yellow light coming in through the window. The result is one of the most artistic posters of the period. DFP-II 392, Maitres 219, Wine Spectator 108, Gold 183.
