FERNAND LÉGER
Fleurs des Champs.

Pen and ink on paper, 1943. 276x176 mm; 10 7/8x7 inches. Initialed and dated in ink, lower right recto. Ex-collection Perls Galleries, New York, with the label on the frame back; private collection, New York; thence by descent.

During World War II, Léger (1881-1955) lived in the United States, teaching at both Yale University, New Haven, and Mills College, Oakland. Throughout this period, he found inspiration for a new series of paintings from the juxtapositions of the natural forms of the surrounding landscape with the abandoned machines that littered them; his enthusiasm for these contrasts can be seen in the current lot.
