Marc Ferrez traveled throughout Brazil and is considered one of its best artistic photographers. He opened his studio at 88 Rua Sao Jose in 1878 and continued to operate at this location until 1903.

In addition to his refined aesthetic sensibility, Ferrez was intent on studying the optics of light to achieve the effect he desired. Interestingly, in Rio the problem of shooting a picture was complicated by the haze, the result of a high proportion of humidity in the air throughout most of the year. The photographs in this album are crisp and clear, and rendered in vivid detail.
