The Symbol and the Saint first appeared in the Chicago Daily News in 1886. with--Eugene Field. Two items: The Symbol and the Saint. Small 8vo, 11 leaves bound together with ribbon; cloth slipcase and chemise with bookplate of William F. Gable. [Chicago], "1886" [1892]. First edition ALS, to General Nelson A. Miles: "This is so excellent a portrait of you that I want to preserve it among other treasures. You can make it much more valuable by putting your autograph signature upon it; will you kindly do so and have your secretary mail it back to me? . . ." 1/2 page, 8vo, with integral blank.
