Christy was an active and popular magazine illustrator who gained a reputation for military scenes thanks to pictures he made during the Spanish-American War. Eager to shake this narrow reputation, his break came with a clever illustration called The Soldier's Dream which depicted a classic all American girl emerging from the smoke of a soldier's pipe: the Christy Girl was born. This poster of a larger-than-life beauty waving the flag above a column of troops combines his two expertises. The Third Liberty Loan began on April 6, 1918, one year to the day after America declared war against Germany. Over 18 million people subscribed and the drive raised over 4 billion dollars. The larger of two sizes. Rawls p. 209, Theofiles 156, Borkan p. 103.
