FIRMIN BOUISSET (1859-1925) [CHRISTMAS TREE]. 1893.
75x49 1/4 inches. Camis, Paris.
Condition B: discoloration, restored losses, overpainting and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Firmin Bouisset was a prolific poster artist whose specialty was depicting children (he often used his daughter Yvonne, and occasionally his son as models). His most famous poster was for Chocolat Menier, in which de depicted a young girl, with a basket of chocolate, writing graffiti on a wall. In this image Bouisset is evoking all of the imagery and wonderment in the childhood universe of Christmas. The drawing is easy and realistic, which was characteristic of his style. Although this image is unrecorded we can assume that, because of its size and the quality of paper, it was not intended to be a decorative panel (Bouisset did design a number of them for La Plume). Most likely it is a poster, before lettering, for a department store.
