first book club edition and preceding the First American Edition. A variant of the first edition with probable first state sheets. These sheets were bound by Cape but, unhappy with the quality of the production, the publisher sold the entire print run to Foyle's Book Club. The binding is identical to the first edition but is a half-centimeter shorter than the trade edition and the dust jacket has been trimmed commensurate to the shorter book. Unlike the trade edition, the publisher did not clip the corners of the flaps.
