ATTITUDE CONTROL FOR THE LUNAR MODULEFLOWN Apollo 13 LM Systems Data Book Sheet. A schematic covering the LM RCS (Reaction Control System) Signal Flow. Approximately 36x10 inches, pre-folded to 8x10 inches. With a Typed Letter Signed by Fred Haise. NASA/MSC, 1969

Additional Details

The LM schematic is labeled "20 RCS" and was a critical reference tool during the flight. The Haise letter reads in part: "It illustrates the RCS rocket engines with their corresponding signal lines from control switches and knobs located on our LM main control panel. The RCS had redundancy, which allowed use of either SYSTEM A, SYSTEM B, or both. The 16 engines shown were 100 pound thrust rocket engines mounted in groups of four on the Ascent Stage of the LM. Multiple signal components are illustrated such as 'YAW', 'PITCH', and 'ROLL' Attitude and Rate Input modules, 'ACA' (Attitude Controller Assembly) for all three flight axis, and 'JET SELECT LOGIC.' Also illustrated is the signal flow for one of the eight identical RCS Thrust Control Assemblies and the associated 'talk back' switch that would show 'gray' if the valves to the engine pairs were open, 'barber pole' if the valves were closed, and 'red' if the valves had failed.
"During training for the Apollo 13 mission, I made two notes in red ink on this sheet relating to maneuvering ability if we lost either the 'A' or 'B' RCS systems. The loss of 'A' would result in not having '-Y axis' translation ability and the loss of 'B' would result in not having '+Y' axis translation ability. . . . I have inscribed and signed the schematic with: 'Carried to the moon on Apollo 13, Fred Haise, Apollo 13 LMP' near the bottom right side of the sheet.
