FLAG FLOWN TO THE LUNAR SURFACE. FLOWN Apollo XVI United States Flag. Approximately 4x6 inches, silk, mounted on a 16x20 inch mat board with 4 inch circular Apollo 16 beta emblem and 8x9 inch color print of Charles Duke saluting the United States flag deployed on the lunar surface.

Additional Details



A mounted text insert reads: "This flag carried to the Moon aboard Apollo 16 during the first scientific exploration of the lunar highlands, April 16 - 27, 1972." An additional insert quoting Rene Descartes reads: "There is nothing so far removed from us so as to be beyond our reach, or so hidden that we cannot discover it".
The mat is signed and inscribed by Duke with: "A salute from the Moon from Apollo 16. A proud moment from the Cayley Plains. Charlie Duke, Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot". Duke has also inscribed and signed the flag with: "This flag was flown to the lunar surface aboard the Lunar Module 'Orion', April 20, 1972. Charles M. Duke, Jr., Apollo 16 LMP."
On the reverse side of the mat is mounted the official Duke Collection coat of arms seal decal that reads: "From the Collection of Charles M. Duke, Jr. United States Astronaut". The decal has also been signed by Duke.
