FORTUNINO MATANIA (1881-1963) SOUTHPORT. Circa 1925. 39 3/4x49 3/4 inches, 101x126 1/2 cm. Jarrold & Sons Ltd., Norwich. Condition B+: loss along top edge; minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; bubbling along right edge. Matania was primarily an illustrator who gained fame during the First World War due to his realistic paintings of the battlefields and trenches. After the war he went back to magazine illustrations focusing mainly on historical scenes. In his posters you can see the realism which gained him such renown during the war years.
