Pen and brown ink and gray wash with black chalk on cream laid paper, lightly squared for transfer in black chalk. 210x225 mm; 8 1/4x9 inches.

According to Colnaghi, "The drawing is a study for a painting commissioned by Raimondo Buonaccorsi (1669-1743) for his palace in the Marchigian hill town of Macerata, known through a ricordo formerly in the Scholz-Formi collection in Hamburg. The painting, part of a decorative scheme of scenes from Virgil's Aeneid, was completed in July 1714, when it was mentioned in a letter by Buonaccorsi (dated July 6, 1714)."
