Additional Details

Gifted by Giacobetti; to a Private New York Collector, in 1994.

A spectacular intrepetative artwork which relies on two different media to depict Bacon photography and painting. The left panel is a photographic portrait of Bacon and the right panel contains elements of his iconic painted self-portrait, which is overlaid onto a photographic representation of his face. In a Bacon-like reversal paintly details, like brushstrokes and the texture of the canvas are superimposed on photographic details of his eye, ear and hair.

The work is accompanied by a photostatic copy of a document, signed by Francis Bacon, in which he writes: "I, the undersigned Francis Bacon, certify to having initaled photographic prints of my face, iris and hands intended to be assembled together or separately at the author's good will, the photographer Francis Giacobetti. . . Knowing of his [Giacobetti's] past work and having utmost trust in his talent, I acknowledge him the right to transform these prints according to his own techniques."
