FRANCISCO DE A. GALI (1880-1965) EXPOSITION INTERNACIONAL / BARCELONA. 1929.
64 3/8x44 3/8 inches. I. G. Siex & Barral Herms, Barcelona.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; creases in margins and image. Two sheets.
Francisco de Gali only designed posters for exhibitions and cultural events. The majority of his works, especially his early ones, are very straightforward and academic in style. When he designed this image, (one of three he created for the Barcelona Exhibition in 1929), it was an unexpected wonder. This poster is to Art Deco as Gaudi was to Art Nouveau. It highlighted for the public a secret of the best Catalan artists; it presents an artistic expression that was free from any outside influence and provides an intimate, personal window into the artist's creativity. In this image we have flags, a railway signal, the dove of peace and the sea presented in an entirely original layout, devoid of the geometric rigidity that you would find in other countries. Gali handles the imagery with sensitive stylization and warm colors that work perfectly together. Rare. Catalunya p. 114.
