FRANCISCO JOSÉ DE GOYA (AFTER VELÁZQUEZ)
Felipe IV.

Etching, 1778-79. 370x310 mm; 14 1/2x12 1/4 inches, wide margins. First edition. A very good, evenly-printed impression with strong contrasts.

According to Harris, in the first edition, "Two types of almost identical paper appear to have been used. In the heavier of the two, the wire marks [from the paper mold] are hardly visible," which is characteristic of the current paper. Thomas also notes that the first edition, printed in 1778-79,"Appears to have been very small."

Felipe IV (1605-1665) ruled Spain at the height of its empire. He was the son of Felipe III and Margarita de Austria. Goya based this portrait, as well as that of Margarita, on paintings by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) now in the Prado, Madrid. Delteil 8; Harris 7.
