FRANCISCO JOSÉ DE GOYA
Felipe IV.

Etching printed in black on cream wove paper, 1778-79. 370x310 mm; 14 1/2x12 1/4 inches, narrow to wide margins. Second edition. A very good, evenly-printed impression with strong contrasts.

According to Harris, the second edition, still before the beveling of the plate and printed around 1815-20, "appears to have been very small."

Felipe IV (1605-1665) ruled Spain at the height of its empire. He was the son of Felipe III and Margarita de Austria (see preceeding lot). Goya based this portrait, as well as that of Margarita, on paintings by Velázquez now in the Prado, Madrid. Delteil 8; Harris 7.
