FRANCISCO JOSÉ DE GOYA
Los Caprichos.
Complete set of 80 etchings with aquatint, circa 1799. 320x215 mm; 12 5/8x8 1/2 inches (sheets), full margins. The second edition, printed around 1855 at the Calcografia for the Real Academia, Madrid; an early printing in this issue, with all four plate edges still sharp and unbeveled on the self portrait, plate 1, whereas normally the upper and lower plate edges are beveled in this edition. Superb and well-inked impressions throughout, with all the subtle aquatint tones distinct and with little to no sign of wear, with drypoint on the legs of the seated woman (plate 31) and on the chest and right leg of the man having his palate removed (plate 33). Original printed paste board covers witht eh self portrait on the front cover (the front and rear covers detached).
According to Harris, "The second edition is well printed and the plates still show relatively little wear. The edition appears to have been very small." Extremely scarce as a complete set in this early issue. Delteil 38-117; Harris 36-115.
