Etching printed in black on cream laid paper, 1778. 375x313 mm; 14 3/4x12 3/8 inches, wide margins. First edition, before the bevel of the plate and before the second edition (also before the bevel) which was printed in a "pale, grayish sepia ink," according to Harris. A very good impression of this scarce, early print with strong contrasts.
After a painting by Velásquez. According to Harris, the first edition of this print, pulled at the Calcografía, Madrid, in 1778-79, appears "to have been small." Delteil 7; Harris 6.
