FRANCISCO TAMAGNO (1851-?) CHAMONIX / MONT BLANC. 1910.
42 3/8x30 1/2 inches. Emile Pecaud & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: minor losses, punch holes and repaired tears in margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
Five years after Abel Faivre's seminal image, Tamagno created this, another striking ski poster, destined to become a classic. Designed at a time when skiing was so new that it was virtually unknown, and skiing advertising even more so, this couple, who are executing a perfectly synchronized ski jump, remain aloft both in the image and in our hearts. Tamagno, a prolific poster artist under contract with Camis, was definitely not particularly well-regarded as a designer of travel posters. His forte was product advertising, but he knew that, in order for a poster to be successful, it had to be striking. Here he succeeded very well, down to the precise coordination of the typography with the image. Hillion p. 199, Alps p. 121, Train p. 66.
