FRANCISKA CLAUSEN (1899-1986)

WM H. MÜLLER & CO'S BATAVIER LIJN. 1929.

Condition B+: replaced and overpainted corners; restoration along repaired tears and creases in margins and image. Framed.

Clausen was a painter and an abstract artist. She studied with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Alexander Archipenko and Fernand Leger. Her paintings reflected Leger's cubist, machine age art as does this poster, which displays elements of the Dutch De Stijl movement. Clausen used simple geometric shapes and a limited palette to illustrate one of fifteen ships in this Dutch shipping line - each of which was named Batavier. The large 'M' on the funnel stands for Müller, the owner of the company.
