FRANCOIS CHARLES CACHOUD LAC D'ANNECY. Circa 1900.
41 1/4x29 1/2 inches. Cornille & Serre, Paris.
Condition B+: minor restoration along vertical and horizontal fold. Matted and framed.
In a style very similar to one of his contemporaries, Hugo d'Alesi, Cachoud depicts a peaceful, nighttime scene with the boat's warm, yellow and orange lights breaking the darkness by spilling out and shimmering across the green and blue lake. "The boat is . . . The France, the largest and most elegant of the steam boats on the lake" (Hillion p. 178). Cachoud was no stranger to Lac d'Annecy, having designed a panel bearing its likeness for the Gare de Lyon in Paris, and his depiction of moonlight is considered by many to be his artistic forte (ibid p. 275).
