This very long cascade of paint by Frank Bowling is of the first year from his important 1970s series of "poured paintings", and only the second of such work to come to auction. Beginning in New York in 1973, the artist used a tilting board platform to control the flow and descent of the acrylic paint vertically down the canvas. With its beautiful stained and poured surface, this work epitomizes the artist's groundbreaking exploration of paint application in the early 70s. Organized by Dr. Courtney J. Martin, The Tate Museum, Britain recently held an exhibition of these abstract paintings withFrank Bowling's Poured Paintings 1973–8, April 30, 2012 - March 10, 2013.
