FRANK DUVENECK
Fishing Quarter, Venice.

Etching, 1880. 183x276 mm; 7 1/4x11 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right, and signed by Otto Bacher in pencil, lower right. With Bacher's red ink stamp (Lugt 2002, lower right recto). A very good impression of this extremely scarce etching, with crisp, partially inky plate edges.

Duveneck (1848-1919) was born near Cincinnati and studied briefly at the Royal Academy, Munich, in the late 1860s. He returned to Munich in 1877 with fellow artists John Henry Twachtman and William Merrit Chase. In Munich he became a popular art instructor, attracting a number of his mostly American students, known as the "Duvencek Boys," to Florence in the fall of 1879. Duveneck and the boys, who included Otto Bacher, wintered in Florence and spent the summer/ fall of 1880 in Venice, where they knew Whistler (sometimes working side-by-side with him on etchings around the city). Poole 2.
