FRANK DUVENECK
View of Shipping from the Riva.

Etching and drypoint on cream laid Japan paper, 1881. 197x345 mm; 7 3/4x13 1/2 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 40. Published by Robert Dunthorne, London. A superb impression of this extremely scarce print with crisp plate edges.

So close in style to Whistler, this is one of 3 views of the Riva by Duveneck (along with Poole 12 and 13, see the preceeding lot) famously confused with Whistler's own Venice etchings when it was first exhibited by the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in London in 1881. Whistler's contract with the Fine Art Society stipulated that he would not exhibit his views of Venice anywhere else for a year. The controversy, which amounted to more publicity for both Whistler and the Painter-Etchers, nonetheless deepened the rift between Whistler and Haden, who was president of the Society at the time. Poole 11.
