The four major British railway companies "were major owners of docks and ships" (Railway p. 23), and consequently created a lot of advertising promoting travel to Europe. The LNER's most prominent passenger service was from the port of Harwich, from whence their ships sailed to the Hook of Holland, Flushing and Zeebrugge, then trains went on to Germany and Central Europe. Mostly an artist of marine subjects, Mason was also known for his depictions of coastal scenes. The three black-hulled ships are the "Vienna," the "Prague," and the "Amsterdam" which were introduced by the LNER in 1929. As in the cases of several of his posters, the title of his original painting, "The Port of Harwich," is different from the title assigned by the LNER, "The Daily Line Up."
