FRANK HAZENPLUG (1873-1908)

THE CHAP - BOOK. May 1896.

21x14 inches, 53 1/4x35 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: tears at edges, some slightly into image; creases in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners. Paper.

A student at the Chicago School of Art, Hazenplug entered the commercial art scene in 1894, when he began working with Will Bradley at Stone & Kimball in Chicago. When Bradley moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, Hazenplug took over his position, designing several Chap Book posters. Affectionately known as "The Green Lady" to contemporaries, this image bears distinct stylistic similarities to Toulouse-Lautrec's 1892 poster for Reine de Joie. Kiehl 100, Margolin p. 100, Reims 1234, Keay p. 28.
