FRANK NEWBOULD (1887-1950)

SCOTLAND BY L.N.E.R / FORT WILLIAM. Circa 1930.

39 3/4x49 1/2 inches, 101x125 3/4 cm. Waterlow & Sons Ltd., Dunstable.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; reds slightly attenuated.

An extraordinary rendition of a Scottish vista of the town of Fort William. Newbould's atmospheric representation of the landscape is very much in the style of a Chinese watercolor painting, in which each horizontal depth-of-field section is a different shade. Frank Newbould did extensive work for the London & North Eastern Railway, as well as the Great Western Railway, The Orient Line and the Belgian Railways. Adept at rendering both architecture and people, Newbould composed his colorful posters with a strong graphic eye.
