FRANK NEWBOULD (1887-1950)

SWIFT / WORLD'S BEST CYCLES. Circa 1930s.

59¼x39 inches, 150½x99 cm. Chorley & Pickersgill, Leeds.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds.

Frank Newbould did extensive work for the London Underground, London & North Eastern Railway, the Great Western Railway, the Cunard Line and the Orient Line. During the Second World War he designed posters for the British Government. Throughout his career he designed very few commercial posters. In 1896, the Swift Cycle Company emerged from what was originally the Coventry Sewing Machine Company; the adaptive brand soon shifted into the motorbike and automobile industries as well. For a time, the Swift company was the second biggest cycle manufacturer in Great Britain. This Swift rider is donning his tennis racket in its rectangular wooden press, the shape of which suggests a date from the 1930s. Rare.
