FRANK SHORT
The New Moon.

Aquatint. 267x412 mm; 10 5/8x16 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right. A superb, luminous impression of this extremely scarce print, with all the subtle tonal variations printing clearly.

Short (1857-1945) trained as an engineer like his father, but by the early 1880s had turned to art and, by the end of the decade, had become a master printmaker. His technical mastery came to Whistler's attention during the 1890s, when Whistler sought advice on etching from Short and proofed some of his last plates in Short's studio.

The tonal effects and reflections on the watery foreground of this image are typical of Whistler's etchings from the late 1870s/1880s.
