Benson (1862-1952) studied in Boston and gradually shifted from academic realism to impressionism following exposure to artistic trends in Paris during his stay there from 1883 to 1884. While most of his etched output depicts sporting scenes and water fowl, some of his prints like this view of men near a dock at dawn, before the glow of a rising sun, have direct ties to Whistler's etchings.
