FRANK W. BENSON
Portrait of Charles Martin Loeffler.

Etching, 1919. 252x202 mm; 10x8 inches, full margins. Fifth state (of 5), with the artist's and sitter's initials lower left. Edition of only 22. Signed, dedicated and numbered "14" in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce etching.

Loeffler (1861-1935) was a German-born American violinist and composer. Born near Berlin, Loeffler emigrated to the United States in 1881, where he joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and became a U.S. citizen in 1887. His works were performed regularly by the Boston Symphony (and by other American orchestras) through his career. Benson (1862-1951) was among the many artist friends of Loeffler, whose portrait was also painted by John Singer Sargent in 1903. Paff 156.
