FRANZ PAUL GLASS (1886-1964) LUXUS AUTO. Circa 1907.
48x36 inches. Hunstanstalt, Munich.
Condition B+: tears in margins, some affecting image; sharp horizontal and vertical folds. Paper.
Franz Glass was a prolific poster artist in Munich before and after the First World War. He belonged to the prestigious group of artists "Die Sechs," (along with Fritz Huebner, Carl Moos, Walenty Zietara, Emil Preetorius, and Maz Schwarzer). This talented assembly all worked for the same printer, and hoped that by joining together they could compete with Ludwig Hohlwein for Munich clients. This is one of Glass's first posters and it is also an important automobile document, as Luxus was the importer of the prestigious de Dion-Bouton cars. The image plays on the cars lined up like soldiers, with a Napoleonic-style drummer boy heralding their arrival. DFP III 1059.
