FRED HOLLAND (1951 - 2016)
Drone.

Acrylic on wood, 1981. Approximately 571x76x533 mm; 22½x3x21 inches. Signed, titled and dated "1-21-81" in pencil, underside.

Provenance: private collection, New York.

The first sculpture to be offered from Fred Holland, Drone, is a scarce, early work, minimal in form and abstract in composition. Its design references the afro-futurist movement, and the works of Ellsworth Ausby and Daniel LaRue Johnson.

Sculptor and choreographer Fred Holland attended Columbus College of Art & Design, OH, attaining a Bachelor of Fine Art in painting in 1973. Straddling the visual and performing arts, he worked primarily in dance until an injury prompted his return to visual art in 1992. His practice consisted of using natural and found materials to construct meaning and narrative of Black history and identity.

Holland exhibited in group shows at institutions including MoMA PS1, the Newark Museum, the Drawing Center in New York, and the Albany Art Museum. He was awarded a Creative Capital Award in 2000, received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 2010 and 2004 and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1992. He participated in residencies at Cité International des Arts Paris, sponsored by Foundation de France, 2007, and the Art Omi International Artists Colony Residency.

Holland passed away in early 2016, shortly after the opening of his solo exhibition at Tilton Gallery in New York.
